[ARCHIVED] Sidewalk Snow Removal

On May 29, 2018, the South Kingstown Town Council adopted an ordinance that requires all property owners that abut a sidewalk to clear the sidewalk of snow, or treat it for ice, within 12 hours after the cessation of a snow/ ice event.  Failure to remove snow or treat ice after the above noted time period will be subject to an enforcement action, up to and including a fine of $175.

In addition, property owners that abut priority sidewalks that fail to remove snow or treat ice by the prescribed timeframe will be subject to the above noted fine and the cost to remove snow or treat ice by the Town.

The following roads have been designated as priority sidewalks:

    Main Street

    Route 108 (Kingstown Road)

    Old Tower Hill Road

    High Street

    Columbia Street

    Church Street

    Kersey Road

    Broad Rock Road

    Railroad Street (Peace Dale)

    Sweet Fern Lane

Exemptions for elderly residents (age 62 or older), disabled residents, or residents with an employment hardship will be considered by the Town Manager’s office at (401) 789-9331 Ext 1201. An exemption application is required to be submitted each year to the Town Manager’s office, even if an exemption was approved in the prior year.  Click here to down load a fillable Snow Removal Exemption Application.

This ordinance is not intended to be punitive, but was adopted to provide a more walkable community during the winter season.
