EEE (Eastern Equine Encephalitis), a serious mosquito-borne disease, has been detected in Rhode Island. The Town of South Kingstown has been working closely with the State (RIEMA, RIDOH, RIDEM) to continue to monitor the situation, and provide the public with information and updates. The State is urging all Rhode Islanders to take personal precautions against EEE. The Town will continue to share information on the situation as it becomes available. Residents are encouraged to monitor RIEMA, RIDEM & RIDOH online and social media outlets for up to date information. Questions should be directed to the State agencies, or residents can call 2-1-1. The Town is also sharing information on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/southkingstownri
The most effective way to reduce the risk of acquiring mosquito-borne illnesses is to reduce exposure to mosquitos and mosquito bites.
Aerial Spraying:
Between September 8th - 10th, the State conducted a first round of aerial spraying in certain areas of Rhode Island. This first round of spraying did not include South Kingstown. On September 19th, the State announced a second round of aerial spraying, which will impact 12 communities, as shown in this map Spray Map (Round 2). This second round of spraying will include limited portions of South Kingstown, and is planned (weather dependent) to occur during the evening hours of Wednesday, September 25th, 2019, beginning around 6:30pm through the early morning hours on Thursday. There will be low flying aircraft in the area. The pesticide being used, Anvil 10+10, is regulated and has been extensively tested. It is being used at very low concentrations. No adverse health effects are associated with its use for mosquito control. However, it is generally good practice for people to limit their exposure to pesticides when possible. While spraying is occurring, it is best to err on the side of caution and limit time outdoors, bring your pets inside, and keep your windows closed. For more information, visit RI DEM’s website at www.dem.ri.gov/mosquito or call 2-1-1.
