The draft of the 2019 Hazard Mitigation Plan Update establishes guidelines for undertaking short-term and long-term actions to reduce the actual or potential loss of life or property from natural hazardous events such as hurricanes, Nor’easters, snow storms, and flooding, and high wind.  The Federal Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 mandates that every state, municipality and tribe prepare a hazard mitigation plan,  Hazard mitigation plans are required to be updated every five years.  This Plan is an update to the Town's 2011 Multi-Hazard Mitigation Strategy Plan – Strategies for Reducing Risks from Natural Hazards in South Kingstown.  It is required that all municipalities have a State and FEMA approved Hazard Mitigation Plan to be eligible to apply for and receive funding under federal financial assistance programs relating to planning, mitigation, and/or disaster recovery.
