South Kingstown Animal Shelter
Founded in 1980, the South Kingstown Animal Shelter accepts neglected, abandoned, and/or stray dogs, cats, and other domestic animals from South Kingstown and Narragansett, as it is a regional shelter serving both communities. The Animal Shelter is committed to improving the quality of life of all strays in its care. To this end, adoption applicants are carefully screened. All possible medical care, including preventative attention, is given to the animals. The Animal Shelter continues to maintain a policy of euthanizing animals only for extreme behavioral problems or incurable medical conditions.
In 2009, the Town Council authorized an award of contract for the construction of the new Animal Shelter Facility. Ground breaking took place in April 2010. Shelter operations were moved into the newly constructed addition in January 2012. This state of the art facility supports the Shelter’s philosophy to provide the animals with the best quality care possible utilizing all available resources.
Social Media
The Animal Shelter operates a Facebook Page, South Kingstown Animal Shelter, so members of the public can keep up with the latest info on the Shelter and animals we have available for adoption.

Fear Free Shelter Program
The goal of the Fear Free Shelter Program is to improve the experiences of animals by educating shelter, rescue, and animal welfare employees and volunteers like you about their emotional needs. We aim to empower you to apply key strategies and techniques designed to reduce the negative emotional states that are commonly experienced by shelter and rescue animals—including fear, anxiety, stress (FAS), and frustration—and increase their enrichment opportunities. The Fear Free Shelter Program provides training suitable for all of the individuals involved in the care and oversight of shelter and rescue animals—from medical and behavioral staff to intake, reception, kennel, and cattery staff to animal services officers, adoption counselors, foster caregivers, and shelter volunteers.
The employees of the South Kingstown Animal Shelter have successfully completed the Fear Free Shelters Program.
