License to Carry a Concealable Weapon (CCW)
The South Kingstown Police Department is now processing all concealed carry applications online. The process is the same for both “new” and “renewal” applications.
Please register through the online link and thoroughly complete the application. An incomplete application will delay the review process. The South Kingstown Police Department has created a process that does not make it unduly difficult for a person to obtain a permit to carry a concealed weapon or revolver as authorized under Rhode Island General Laws § 11-47-11. The South Kingstown Police Department has a responsibility to properly vet the application to ensure the following criteria have been met as specified by the above-mentioned general law.
Age and residency requirement: The applicant must be twenty-one (21) years of age or older, have either a bona fide residence or place of business within the Town of South Kingstown or a bona fide residence within the United States and a license to carry a concealed pistol or revolver on his/her person issued by authorities of any other state or subdivision of the United States.
Reason requirement: The police department must be satisfied that the person has a good reason or proper reason for carrying a pistol or revolver.
Suitability requirement: The department must be satisfied that the applicant has demonstrated proof of ability to safely handle the firearm in question and that the applicant is a suitable person to be licensed.
The department does not administer the pistol/revolver qualification course for the applicant.
APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
Applications will not be considered unless the following conditions have been met:
The application must be filled out completely by the applicant. An incomplete application will not be processed and will delay the decision of your application.
Proof of qualification that is certified by a weapons instructor (National Rifle Association instructor, United States Revolver Association, or other Certified Range Officer) must be supplied along with a copy of the firearms instructor’s certificate. (RIGL § 11-47-16).
Two (2) forms of positive identification must be submitted. Copies of the identification documents must be uploaded to your online application. Acceptable forms of identification are birth certificate, driver’s license, passport, ID card, and social security card.
Three (3) references and reference letters are required for both new and renewal applications and are to be submitted with the application. All three reference letters must be typed (not handwritten) and must be dated. Reference letters must be written by the reference, not the applicant and must not be identical. For renewal applications, you may use the same reference, but updated letters are required. References cannot be an immediate relative, who is residing in the same household.
If the permit is to be used for employment, a typed letter of explanation must be submitted on your employer’s letterhead and included with the application.
If the permit is not for employment, a typed letter must be submitted by the applicant stating the reason requesting the license to carry a concealed weapon. All letters must be signed and dated by a Notary Public.
A forty-dollar ($40.00) license fee is required by RIGL § 11-47-12. A check or money order, payable to the Town of South Kingstown, will be due upon the issuance of the permit. Please DO NOT send a check or money order to the police department.
The application and any issued permits become the property of the South Kingstown Police Department and will not be returned.
All required documents must be uploaded within the online application process. Some exceptions may be considered.
