Elderly Homeowner's Tax Credit Program

Amount Of Tax Credit For The Elderly Homeowner's Tax Exemption

The amount of the tax exemption is based on a sliding income scale that is approved by the Town Council annually.

Qualifications For The Elderly Homeowner's Tax Credit Program

Qualifications for the Elderly Homeowner's Tax Credit Program for the 2011 tax roll are as follows:

1) You or your spouse must be 65 years of age or older as of December 31, 2010

2) You must be a full or partial owner of the premises you occupy, and have owned and occupied property in South Kingstown for the past 5 years.

3) Your total gross household income must not exceed $37,000 for 2010

Proof of income such as W-2 forms, Social Security benefit statement or Form SSA-
1099, private pension, dividend and interest statements must be provided annually in
order to qualify for benefits.

For capital gains, you must also provide the 1099 provided by the brokerage firm and your 2010 tax return. Applications cannot be accepted without these documents.

4) You must be legally domiciled in South Kingstown, registered to vote in South
Kingstown and your motor vehicles must be registered in South Kingstown.

5) You must have filed an application by April 30, 2011. Contact the Assessor's Office if this deadline is missed.

Veteran's Exemptions and Widow or Widower of a Veteran

Amount of Tax Credit:

Qualifying Veteran's receive a $126.00 tax credit toward the taxes on their dwelling or motor vehicle. The deadline to file an application is five (5) days prior to the certification of the tax roll.

How To Qualify For A Veteran's Exemption

1) Applicant's legal and primary residence must be South Kingstown. In addition the applicant must be registered to vote in South Kingstown and their motor vehicles must be registered to in South Kingstown.

2) Veteran must be Honorably Discharged.

3) Applicant must complete an application within five (5) days of the certification of the tax roll of any given year using information on the discharge papers, (DD 214).

4) Applicant must record the DD 214 in the Town Clerks Office.

5) Applicant must meet specific qualifying dates.

100% Disabled Service Related Veteran's Exemption

Amount of Tax Credit:

Qualifying Veteran's receive a $252.00 tax credit toward the taxes on their dwelling or motor vehicle. The deadline to file an application is five (5) days prior to the certification of the tax roll of any given year.

How to Qualify:

South Kingstown must be the applicant's legal and primary residence, the veteran must be registered to vote in South Kingstown, and their motor vehicles must be registered in South Kingstown. Applicant must also provide a letter from the Veteran's Administration stating that the applicant has a 100% service related disability

Prisoner of War (POW) Exemption

Amount of Tax Credit:

Qualifying applicants receive a $409.65 tax credit toward taxes on their dwelling or motor vehicle. The deadline to file an application is five (5) days of the certifcation of the tax roll of any given year.

How to Qualify:

South Kingstown must be the applicant's legal and primary residence, the veteran must be registered to vote in South Kingstown, and their motor vehicles must be registered in South Kingstown. Applicant must also provide a letter from the Veteran's Administration that they were a prisoner of war

Gold Star Parent Exemption

A parent of a son or daughter killed in a military conflict. The deadline to file an application is five (5) days of the certification of the tax roll of any given year.

Amount of Tax Credit:

Qualifying applicant's receive a $378.00 tax credit toward taxes on their dwelling or motor vehicle.

How to Qualify:

South Kingstown must be the applicant's legal and primary residence, the veteran must be registered to vote in South Kingstown, and their motor vehicles must be registered in South Kingstown. Applicant must also provide a letter from the Veteran's Administration that they are a parent of deceased veteran killed in a military conflict.

Total Service-Connected Veteran'sDisability on Specially Adapted Housing

Amount of Tax Credit

Qualifying applicants receive a $710.00 tax credit toward the taxes on their dwelling.

How to Qualify:

South Kingstown must be the veteran's legal and primary residence, the veteran must be registered to vote in South Kingstown, and their motor vehicles must be registered in South Kingstown. Also, the applicant must provide a letter from the Veteran's Administration stating they are totally disabled through a military service connected disability and who, by reason of the disability, has received assistance in acquiring "specially adaptive housing" under laws administered by the Veteran's Administration, provided that the real estate is occupied as his or her primary domicile.

The deadline to file is five (5) days of the certification of the tax roll of any given year.

Legally Blind Exemption

Amount of Tax Credit:

Qualifying applicants receive a $426.00 tax credit toward taxes on their dwelling.

How to Qualify:

South Kingstown must be the applicant's legal and primary residence, the applicant must be registered to vote in South Kingstown. A letter from an Optometrist or Ophthalmologist must also be provided stating that the individual is legally blind.

The deadline to file is five (5) days of the certification of the tax roll of any given year.
