All sewer work in South Kingstown must be performed by a Town Licensed Drainlayer or a RI Master Plumber.
Drainlayer Exam
To become a Town Licensed Drainlayer, you must take and pass a Town Drainlayer Exam. To prepare for the exam, you are strongly encouraged to read the South Kingstown Wastewater Specifications booklet and Chapter 19, Division 4 of the Wastewater Ordinance.
The Wastewater Specifications booklet may be purchased for $5.00 at the Wastewater Division Office, 509 Commodore Perry Highway, Wakefield, Rhode Island or you may download a copy of both the booklet and Chapter 19, Division 4 of the Wastewater Ordinance (see below).
Call the Wastewater Division Office at (401) 789-9331 extension 2257 to schedule an appointment to take the exam. You are allowed two hours to complete the exam and are encouraged to bring a calculator. You must score 70% or above to pass the exam.
Drainlayer License
Once you pass the Drainlayer exam, you are eligible to obtain a Drainlayer License by completing the paperwork and paying the $25 annual license fee. The license expires on December 31st of each year.
