BACK-UP/PER DIEM VAN DRIVER
The town-operated Senior Center has an immediate need for an individual to provide back-up driver duties on a per diem basis. This position, which is generally limited to an average of 25-30 days per year, provides coverage in the absence of the regular full time Driver/Dispatcher.
This position is responsible for driving a lift-equipped, 18-passenger mid-sized bus to transport older adults to the Senior Center, shopping and a variety of errands within the Town limits. To be considered, candidates must possess a valid Rhode Island Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a “P” endorsement. This position is subject to random Controlled Substance and Alcohol Testing. The position pays $13.82 per hour.

The Town has an opportunity for an experienced individual to join our engineering team. The Engineering Assistant performs specialized technical work in AUTOCAD and surveying, and conducts field inspections of highway, construction and utility improvements throughout the community.
In this position you will be required to conduct various measurements and studies in the field and/or office and prepare reports of findings; maintain and update various municipal maps and databases including utility and highway as –built record drawings and maps; prepare engineering design plans/ details, inspect right-of-way, highway and various utility improvements to ensure conformity with Town construction procedures; maintain various departmental and municipal databases, both electronically and in written form; as well as perform other engineering related duties.
The successful candidate will be self-motivated, and have the ability to follow detailed oral instruction, interpret sketches and layout, and determine the medium to be used as well as the characteristics of the final project desired. You must have a minimum of a high school diploma, or equivalent, and two years of direct experience, or a comparable combination of education and experience. An Associate’s degree in civil engineering, land surveying and previous municipal experience is desirable.
This full time position has a starting salary of $44,121 and includes a full benefit package. POLICE DEPARTMENT/HARBOR PATROL
This individual is responsible for the supervision of the Assistant Harbormaster. The Harbormaster oversees the enforcement of State Laws and Local Ordinances pertaining to the operation of boats on South Kingstown waterways. Responsibilities include: constant monitoring of the waterways to ensure boaters are operating their vessels in a safe and responsible manner; conducting spot and safety checks of vessels; monitoring speed; issuing summonses for serious violations including illegal discharge and serious safety infractions; reporting alcohol related issues/incidents to the police department; enforcing mooring regulations; checking derelict boats and motors for hazards; and confirmation of the proper placement of buoys and signs marking speed restrictions. The Harbormaster is also accountable for the safekeeping and proper daily maintenance of the patrol vessels including the checking of oil and battery levels, wash down of the boat and trailer, flushing engine, spot checking for safety issues, and the monitoring of weather conditions for small craft advisories.
The qualified candidate will be proficient in the handling of boats and the operation of marine related equipment; must know how to read and interpret boating charts and maps; have the ability to effectively communicate and handle situations that arise with the public and fellow employees; must have completed a boating safety education program approved by the director of the DEM or US Coast Guard; has basic first aid and CPR training; and is able to obtain any other certifications/licenses as required by the State of Rhode Island for the operation of a motor vessel. Must have a valid driver’s license.
The position pays $20 per hour and works a seasonal schedule of approximately forty (40) hours a week for fifteen (15) weeks per year (late May to September) and minimal off season hours as needed.
The Assistant Harbormaster, under the direction of the Harbormaster, is tasked with the enforcement of State Laws and Local Ordinances pertaining to the operation of boats on South Kingstown waterways. Duties include: patrolling of the waters checking for any speed violations; illegal discharge; alcohol infractions; abandoned vessels; safety equipment infringements; and enforcement of mooring regulations. This position also monitors the condition of the vessels, performs maintenance as needed, conducts daily spot checks for safety concerns and keeps a detailed vessel log book.
Prior experience in boat handling and operation of marine related equipment is desirable, but not required, however, must have the willingness to learn, and have completed a boating safety education program approved by the director of the Department of Environmental Management or the US Coast Guard. An equivalent combination of experience and education will be considered. Must have the ability to effectively communicate and handle situations that arise with the public and fellow employees; have or be able to obtain any licenses that are required by the State of RI for the operation of a motor vessel; training in basic first aid and CPR; and a valid driver’s license.
This position pays $15 per hour and works a works a seasonal schedule of approximately 24 hours per week for fifteen (15) weeks per year (late May to September) with minimal off season hours as needed.
