Senior Center
Back-Up/Per Diem Van Driver

The town-operated Senior Center has an immediate need for an individual to provide back-up driver duties on a per diem basis. This position, which is generally limited to an average of 25-30 days per year, provides coverage in the absence of the regular full time Driver/Dispatcher.

This position is responsible for driving a lift-equipped, 18-passenger mid-sized bus to transport older adults to the Senior Center, shopping and a variety of errands within the Town limits. To be considered, candidates must possess a valid Rhode Island Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a “P” endorsement. This position is subject to random Controlled Substance and Alcohol Testing. The position pays $18.00 per hour.

Library Director

The Town of South Kingstown, a diverse coastal community of 30,000 citizens, is seeking a dynamic and experienced library professional for the role of Library Director. The position is responsible for the management of the Town’s public library system, and duties include development of the annual operating budget, capital budgeting and projects, collection and program development, personnel, grant writing, community relations, planning and development of short and long-range library goals, and oversight of library building and grounds maintenance.

The South Kingstown Public Library system consists of the central Peace Dale Library and two branch libraries, Kingston Free Library and Robert Beverly Hale Library, all located in beautiful historic buildings. The Libraries have a combined collection of 130,000, and this year’s programming efforts include 482 annual programs with over 10,000 attendees. The Library Director leads a team of ten (10) full-time and twenty-five (25) part-time employees in delivering customer-focused services and programs to residents and library patrons. This position, which reports to the Town Manager and a seven (7) member Library Board of Trustees, will oversee a budget of over $1,200,000 for FY 2016-2017.

To be considered, applicants must have considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of modern library systems and programs, must have experience with traditional and emerging library services, as well as be knowledgeable about current and future trends in the application of new technologies to those services. Applicants must possess a proven track record of administrative, financial, supervisory, and management skills, as well as a genuine interest in working with the public. Required qualifications include a Master’s Degree in Library Science (MLS) or Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited program and a minimum of five years of progressively responsible direct public library administration experience with three or more years in a supervisory capacity. The salary for this non-union position is $70,843 - $78,154 and includes a comprehensive benefit package.

Building Maintenance Technician

The Town has an immediate need for a person experienced in building maintenance. This position, which is mainly situated in the public safety complex, but will work in other departments as well, is responsible for basic custodial duties including sweeping, dusting, vacuuming, washing floors and police cars, cleaning restrooms/offices and maintaining some of the exterior such as rain gutters, sidewalks and minor grounds work. You may also perform some semi-skilled interior building maintenance as needed which may include painting, floor covering, plumbing, and carpentry.

This part time NEA union position, which pays $17.80 per hour, works Monday – Friday 6am-10 am. Some fringe benefits are provided.

To qualify, you must have a high school diploma or GED and one year of experience in the care of buildings and grounds or an equivalent combination of education and experience. You must also possess a valid driver’s license and good driving record.

Highway Seasonal Laborer

The Highway Department is accepting applications for summer/fall seasonal employment. This position will assist the Highway Department crews in performing heavy manual labor including asphalt patching, grass and brush cutting and drainage work.

The position pays $14.10 per hour and works Monday-Friday 7:30am-4:00 pm with a ½ hour unpaid lunch. It is expected that this position will last until mid to late Fall 2016.

You must be able to work in various weather conditions, have a valid driver’s license, be physically able to lift, push and pull up to 75 pounds and be at least eighteen years of age at the time of hire. Previous experience in a similar setting is desirable, but not required.

Preschool Teacher's Aide

The Parks and Recreation Department’s Stepping Stone Preschool Program has a thirteen and one-quarter (13.25) hour per week vacancy. In this position, you will work in the 3 and 4 year old classrooms on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays 8:15am -11:45 am, and on Wednesday afternoons 12:30 - 3:15pm. Additional hours available on occasion.

Candidates should have college coursework in early childhood or elementary education and a minimum of one year of experience working with young children or an equivalent combination of training and experience. The successful candidate must be able to obtain certification in CPR and Standard First Aid within 6 weeks of hiring. The position pays $9.93 per hour.

Library Aide

Part Time Library Aide

The Town has a position available at the Peace Dale Library for someone to work 11.5 hours per week. The position schedule is: Tuesday 3 pm – 8 pm, Friday 2:30 – 5 pm and on Saturday 1pm – 5 pm. The schedule is not flexible.

The duties include shelving library books and other materials, emptying the book drop, assisting at the circulation desk checking in/out materials, registering patrons for library cards, answering the telephone and various other clerical duties. The position pays $9.60 per hour.
