Motor vehicle taxes are for the vehicles owned during the previous calendar year. For example, the bill for the fiscal year starting July 1, 2008 and ending June 30, 2009 reflects the number of days the vehicle’s license plate was registered in South Kingstown during the period January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2007.

Real Estate taxes are assessed to the owner of record as of December 31st of each year for the current calendar year. For example, the real estate tax bill for the fiscal year starting July 1, 2008 and ending June 30, 2009 covers the period from January 1, 2008 through December 31, 2008.

Prorated real estate taxes are assessed as of the date of the certificate of occupancy (CO) for the number of days from the CO date to the end of the calendar year. For example, if a CO is issued on October 1, 2008, the homeowner would receive a pro-rated tax bill covering the period October 1, 2008 to December 31, 2008, or 92 days.
