A Geographic Information System, GIS, is a collection of computer hardware and software used for storage, retrieval, mapping, and analysis of geographic data. Spatial features are stored in a coordinate system (latitude/longitude, state plane, UTM, etc.) which references a particular place on the earth.
Each feature, i.e. property boundaries, soils, or roads, is stored as an individual layer. Descriptive attributes in tabular form are associated with these spatial layers. These spatial data and associated attributes can be overlain and used together for mapping and analysis.
