 Parks and Recreation Department
Department Overview
The Parks and Recreation Department was created in 1939 to provide high quality parks and recreation services for the citizens of South Kingstown. Our department is governed by the South Kingstown Recreation Commission, a five-member policy board, which is responsible for overseeing the operation of the department.

The department employs an administrative staff of sixteen full-time employees and over two hundred part-time and seasonal employees. The daily administration of the department is under the direction of the Director of Parks and Recreation.

The Parks and Recreation Department annual operations budget is approximately $1.9 million. Approximately 60% of the operations budget is generated by fees and charges, facility management, and Neighborhood Guild trust funds. The remainder of the operations budget is supported by local tax support.

Mission Statement
Serving the needs of the community through quality parks and facilities and by offering life long learning through recreational and cultural programs.

Specifically we will:
Improve the health of our community through the provision of programming and facilities that encourage staying active and fit.
Be good stewards of the public facilities under our care. All facilities will be clean, safe, well maintained, and environmentally friendly.
Connect all citizens to our community by offering programs and facilities that encourage inclusion and participation.
Provide a wide variety of activities that encourage all segments of our population to use their free time both positively and productively.
Develop facilities that will improve the livability of our community. These improvements will include recreation facilities, parks, open space, greenways, and multi-use paths.
Make service to our patrons a high priority by creating user-friendly procedures, eliminating red tape, and treating them, as we would like to be treated.
