 Adopt-A-Park |
| Introduction |
The South Kingstown Recreation Commission created the Adopt-A-Park Program in 1999. Currently, twenty organizations and groups have adopted local parks. The goals of the program include:
1. Promote the involvement of residents in the maintenance and upkeep of the South Kingstown park system;
2. Encourage neighborhood development revitalization through respective park improvements;
3. Reduce vandalism within the park system by Adopt-A-Park participants monitoring park usage and contacting the Parks and Recreation Department concerning improper use;
Who Can Participate?
Individuals, neighborhood associations, civic groups, churches, schools, businesses, and community organizations are encouraged to adopt a park in their area. Please contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 789-9301 for an Adopt-A-Park packet to adopt your favorite park.

| Participant Responsibilities return to top |
Adopt-A-Park participants will be required to complete the following responsibilities:
1. Complete a Spring and Fall park clean-up each year. The Spring clean-up will be on the same date as the Town's annual clean-up. The Fall clean-up will be on a mutually acceptable date during the months of September or October. The Parks and Recreation Department will provide the trash bags and will remove all debris.
2. Plant and maintain one planting bed in a mutually agreed site within the park. The Adopt-A-Park participant will be responsible for purchasing or obtaining donations for the planting materials. The bed will be completed in May of each year and will be maintained through September. The primary goal is to provide color and beauty in a centrally located and visible area within the park.
3. Agree to participate in the Adopt-A-Park program for a minimum of two calendar years.
4. Adopt-A-Park participants are also encouraged to make recommendations and participate in park improvement projects. This participation may include providing input on the improvement plans and/or raising funds for the project.
5. All Adopt-A-Park participants must complete the organization registration form and individual releases.

1. An Adopt-A-Park acknowledgment will be posted on the park sign indicating that the park has been adopted by the respective individuals or organization.
2. Adopt-A-Park participants will be acknowledged in a Parks and Recreation brochure that is mailed to all South Kingstown residents annually.
3. The satisfaction of improving their favorite park.

To ensure the safety of Adopt-A-Park participants and proper planning for park improvements, the Parks and Recreation Department requests that participants adhere to the following guidelines:
1. Work should only be completed during daylight hours and in appropriate weather.
2. Participants must wear protective clothing including work gloves, sturdy shoes, and long sleeve shirts and pants to prevent injury from sharp objects, insect stings, sunburn and poison ivy.
3. Participants should take breaks and drink plenty of water to avoid heat-related illness or over-exertion.
4. The coordinator must provide adequate supervision for any participants under 18 years of age.
5. Extreme care should be exhibited in areas where hazardous conditions may exist. Examples include roads, parking lots, bridges, construction sites, open water, and areas where mowing, tree trimming, or pest control is in progress.
6. Only non-motorized hand tools may by utilized.
7. Please have a first aid kit available in case of injury.
8. All Adopt-A-Park efforts must be coordinated through the South Kingstown Parks and Recreation Department.
