COMMUNICATIONS DEPARTMENT
Mission Statement
The Communications Department is charged with enforcement of the Rhode Island Fire Prevention Code, as it pertains to the installation and maintenance of commercial fire alarm systems for all new and existing buildings in South Kingstown. The Department also responds 24 hours a day, seven days a week with the Union and Kingston fire districts to all commercial fire alarm activations. It is the responsibility of the Department to assist the fire department in locating the origin of the alarm and then reset the system.
The Department is also charged with the engineering, installation, and maintenance of the Town's Municipal Cable Plant, which supports the following:
- Municipal Fire Alarm
- Fire Station Horns
- Sewer Alarm Monitoring
- Burglar Alarm Monitoring
- High Speed Internet
- Off Premise Phone Extensions
- Remote stations for two-way radios
Accomplishments 2005 - 2006 return to top
- The Department was dispatched to 186 commercial fire alarm activations
- 22 municipally connected commercial systems were approved
- 24 local commercial fire alarm systems were approved
- 86 projects were submitted for plan review
- Continued progress with Phase II of GIS cable plant mapping
- Received $17,075 in Municipal Fire Alarm connection and plan review fees
Goals 2006 - 2007 return to top
- Modify existing cable plant to support Town Intranet service to the Public Safety Complex
- Complete Phase II of GIS cable plant mapping
- Continue to modify existing cable plant to create test points throughout the system to minimize time spent when troubleshooting any of the 50-plus circuits that are supported by the cable plant
- Complete the five, ten, fifteen-year master plan for cable plant usage and expansion
- Complete Phase II of fire code inspections of all existing commercial buildings
